That article seems to focus on only one subgenre of death metal. My favorite band of that genre is Death, and some of the related "black metal" bands. I actually prefer grindcore of thrashcore, probably because it is much more punk-like. Think Napalm Death and spin-off Industrial thrash metal bands like Godflesh or Fear Factory.

Why do I like it? Power personified in the music.

I don’t listen to any of the bands listed there. I can say that when I listen to Amon Amarth (who claim to play death metal but I don’t think the content/lyrics are like the ones listed here), I feel no aggression at all. It’s not a release of aggression for me either. I actually find the relentless beat and the rhythm just...enjoyable. Puts a smile on my face and not because there is some sort of cathartic release of negative emotion, but just...because it does.

There are clearly genre/subgenre issues here. I just found the article a bit odd given the history of some Norwegian black metal. YMMV.

Amon Amarth are sort of "Viking fantasy metal" and almost symphonic at times. I wouldn't call them death metal and they are certainly not black metal.

Not all black metal is Scandinavian... Cradle of Filth for example...

Right. So these guys that never shut up about death and dying and killing and whatever, honestly I just find it boring.

My daughter and her boyfriend in line for an Amon Amarth show. No cannabis was involved in making this picture, I am sure... ;)\

I see the Behemoth shirt. Keep giving them a try but can't decide to get into it.
