Why would anyone drop $1K on a phone now that is not 5G ready? Yet people are lining up. Some folks must have throw away money!

Better cameras. Better batteries. Better water resistance. Better iOS for virtual reality. Do you have 5g in your neighborhood? I don’t.

I am content mostly with my 6s plus.

I spent a grand on my last phone, why wouldn't I spend a grand on my next phone?

I waited for deals on the 7+ after the next model was out and traded in my old iPhone 6. I figured the 7+ is plenty for what I need for a long time. I used to get the latest and greatest but at this point, I really don't need it. When 5G becomes more available, I'll re-evaluate and see what's out.

Google Pixel still works great. Not going to get another until it doesn't. And never going to get a phone that won't fit into a shirt pocket, made that mistake once.

Moto Mod Verizon version is 5G up gradable and is $350.00. Not in the same league as Apple 11's but pretty good for average use. I have Moto G5+. Takes pretty good pictures in average light.

I have the same problem as Mike B for phone size. My phone must comfortably fit in my pant side pocket.

I went for smaller phones up until the iPhone 7+. I got the 6 and thought the 6+ was too big (at that time). Then I had a couple of friends who had a 7+. I wear cargo shorts, most with a tech pocket and even those without are plenty big enough for a phone, like 95% of the time. The few days it gets colder, I have cargo pants. The only time the bigger (phone) size annoys me is when I have a pair of jeans on, which isn't often. I dropped a pants size around the beggining of the year (almost down to fat) and so I don't have that many pair of pants. I'll probably get another pair or so of cargo pants before the winter. I guess I'm used to the size of the 7+ and don't want to go back. As long as the current phone holds out, I probably won't even think about an upgrade for a couple of years.

This seems like a weird battle to pick. 5G won't be practically useful for 5 years or more and even then, only if you live in a major city.

That and it isn't like regular LTE isn't fast enough for what I do on my phone 99.999% of the time.

This 5G buzz reminds me of 4K.
Transitioning from 3G to LTE was a significant change regarding speeds and I've been quite content with the current LTE coverage. LTE to 5G, not so much of a "necessity", as 5G seems to have more of an involvement with different services other than just Mobile Connectivity. Plus, the first generation of devices may end up getting hit with performance and battery issues because of the newer Tech.

Not picking a fight ... just expressing my thought.

I think 5G will get implemented faster than we think. It could have been even faster if the Admin did not pick the fight with Huawai.

You also have to take into consideration ATSC 3.0 and the Frequencies that were brought up to support it.

Considering how long it took for Broadcast networks to Embrace the transition to Digital, I would not hold my breath for the transition to ATSC 3.0 any time soon. 5G on the other hand may be much quicker.

While 5G and ATSC 3.0 are separate entities, I see some kind of merger between the two in the future considering that 5G will be a transport of Digital Media, 4K specifically.

We're already seeing the large Telcoms playing roles as Digital Media Distribution Gateways, so I'd expect more AT&T/Direct TV and Comcast/NBC Universal type deals in the near future.

With 5G porn in 4K will be possible on phones! Porn industry has adopted the latest video standards before anyone else - strange but true.

I did the cargo pants thing once and found I don't like my whole wardrobe to consist of cargo pants. I think they can get a 6 inch screen into a shirt pocket size now, but that is the test. If it won't fit in a shirt pocket, it don't fit me.

We shall see - but according to this - Free 4K TV with an antenna is almost here ATSC 3.0 is being rolled out in the top 40 markets in 2020.

"So far, this seems to be the case. Stations in 40 markets across the country have promised to start broadcasting 3.0 before the end of 2020. Some early stations have already gone live, though even if you live in their areas you won't be able to see anything without hardware that, as yet, isn't available."

"Stations that switch to ATSC 3.0 will still have to keep broadcasting ATSC 1.0 for 5 years."

So I'm waiting and we'll see if it comes to pass. I sit about 7 feet away from my 4k TV. Got it a while ago. It is 55 inches and I'd like to get a 65 inch set. If nothing breaks, I'll have to move out an old set (e.g. 55 inch set from my upstairs bonus room, which is basically a guest bedroom, and is probably about a decade old back lit LED). So I'm basically holding off until I see it they will be selling sets with a tuner built in. I'm sure there are others holding off upgrades waiting to see if this will come to pass.

As far as 5G goes, I could care less. My iPhone 7+, as long as it works, is fine. I really don't need 5G. I probably won't (as long as the current phone works) even be interested in looking at an upgrade for at least a couple of years.

If ATSC 3.0 doesn't come to pass or is pushed back far enough, then maybe I'll look at something like - https://www.projectorreviews.com/op...uhd-laser-projector-is-this-the-game-changer/

I can take my current main system projector (Epson 5030) and rotate it to the bedroom (and replace my Epson 8350).

Not in a rush for either.

So the current 4K TVs will be able to natively receive/display the ATSC 3.0 signal? All the markets would be interested in will be broadcasting in 2020 or soon thereafter. That's good news.
