I was kind of looking forward to this. apatow and rogen have created a quirky in-house movie-making shop reminiscent of kevin smith's view-askewuniverse. I was hoping that the combination/clash of smith's relentlessly raw sexual humor and the soul-bearing emotionality of the apatow-rogen aproach would make for a tasty treat of a film.

Alas, the experiment fails. What we get is Smith's usual sex=barrage except this time its mostly stale (that stuff sounds funnier when delivered by smith's house actors, and only jason mewes is present here) that is occasionally, and ineptly leavened by the latent-and-surfacing love story between the rogen and banks characters.

In those scenes, the bare-your-manboobs emoting that works well in apatow films feels jarringly out of place here, the two styles never mesh.

plus my gosh, yet another shclub-guy-gets-hot-girl thing ... how can *I* move to apatow's world, because that just doesn't happen in mine.

Smith's worst film since mallrats. 4/10 stars.

I'm going to have to disagree here. This was a Kevin Smith movie, first and foremost, just utilizing some of Apatow's actors. As a Kevin Smith movie, I think it delivered. Maybe not his finest work, but I was laughing through the whole thing. The day it's released to BD, I'll be picking it up.

I thought it was a fine collage of two different raunchy humor styles. I haven't walked out of a theater more pleased with the amount of money I spent in quite a while.

Well I was reading your review and was going like dang, this is '
not what I wanted to hear about this movie.

    Then you said:

And that statement pretty much wipes away everything you said , in my
    book anyways.

Mallrats is without a question one of Smith's best flicks.

There are some good reviews here.......

I've got to agree with Stephen as I could not stand Mallrats either, though I really don't care for most of Smith's movies. His interviews are more entertaining than his actual works.

When Mallrats was released it was almost universally panned, and IMO deservedly so. Compared with clerks, it was a colossal unfunny mess, probably the worst example of a 'sophomore slump' ever. For me, virtually nothing about it worked, save for the end credits where they played that great weezer song.

True, as the years have gone by, the film has gained a cult following amongst some folks - Lord knows why ...

As a huge smith fan he's a niche, at best his works are for guys weekeneds when lots of drinking is taking place and men have reduced themselves to there worst, at these moments Smith is the best film maker of all time.

From an artistic sense he really only has 3 movies of mass market appeal, Clerks, Chasing Amy & the one with Jennifer lopez dying in it.

Chasing Amy is still the best of his movies for me but Dogma, Jay & Silent bob strike back always come out when the guys are around looking for "Dick & fart Joke humour"

I am sure in this Zack & Miri will deliver....I hope lol.

I saw it this weekend. It was funny but not as witty as a lot of his movies are. I go to his movies for the dialog, and it was okay, but not great in this movie. I'll buy it when it comes out, but I'm a K.S. fanboy, so that's not saying a whole lot.

I liked Chasing Amy the most of all his movies, put Mallrats and Zack and Miri somewhere in the middle with Jersey Girl a very very distant last place.

Jay and Silent Bob was funny but WAY overdone and almost too wink-wink nudge-nudge.

I have to give this a shot when I have time. To me a Kevin Smith film is a late night event with good friends. I enjoyed the revisit to Clerks in Clerks II, and I ready for the next event.

I saw this this weekend with Carole and we both laughed and most of the theatrer was laughing. It wasn't brilliant art, but it sure was funny.

We watched this over the weekend. We were both laughing through a lot of the movie and I'll probably watch it again in the near future.

I also have to completely disagree Stephen. I watched this with my brother, his fiance, and our sister and we were in stitches. Maybe it was the company but man, this is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Yes its crude and crass but I don't know how you call it stale. The rom-com element was predictable but I've yet to see a romantic comedy in my ENTIRE LIFE that's not 100% predictable so you have to take that with a grain of salt.

CJ, have you seen Nick and Norah's Infinite Play List? If not, I suspect you'll enjoy it.

I thought Zack and Miri was pretty good right up to the point where they have to "do it"...

That was it for me...lost me completely from that point on.

I would like to see Jack and Miri myself, she was pretty hot and I would prolly be the only one she wont fuck. Zack on the other hand did pretty well.

Anyway, saw this last night and laughed my ass off. I had tears at times and gaged near the end when the camera dude was filming from below.
The dialogue, while maybe not as deep (Pun Intended) as Dogma, was excellent. The way Smith made the conversations go like people do this shit everyday just kills me.
I loved it and will buy it on Blu.
